From the Minutes of the June 4th, 2008 Oak Island Town Council Special Meeting;

Council member Snead stated she was going to say she speaks for the other two members of Council who voted for the Long Beach Area to be annexed, but if not please correct her, but the way she looks at it, the only way our town can increase its tax base is to annex areas where there are Commercial businesses. 

She stated that's the only way we can give relief to our property owners on Oak Island.  She stated there are some people that say that we shouldn't have staff and that we should downsize and that we should not be building buildings that we need for our staff to work in. 

She stated those kinds of things we must have and the only solution to relieve some of the burden on taxpayers and on property owners is by increasing our Commercial tax base.  She stated that's the reason she voted for annexation of the Long Beach area.


And from the same meeting;

Mayor Vereen stated we want to stay primarily residential on the island, so where are we supposed to move any potential growth.

He stated you either move forward and grow or you just stop and die, so how do you plan to do that, not take it over, not have any future growth?

He stated we are getting ready to do away with condos on the island; we are not going to enlarge our Commercial area any; the beach itself is just not going to make everything happen.

IT SEEMS ALL OF THE TOWNS WITHIN A THREE MILE RADIUS OF LONG BEACH ROAD HAVE DECIDED IT'S OPEN SEASON FOR FORCED ANNEXATION.

SOUTHPORT IS TRYING TO COME OVER THE PROGRESS ENERGY CANAL. 



ST. JAMES WANTS TO CONTROL THE MIDWAY ROAD/211 FOLKS.


CLICK ON THE PETITION BUTTON AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT, WE ARE ASKING THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO RETHINK THE ST. JAMES TOWN CHARTER.  THEY FORMED A TOWN TO PREVENT FORCED ANNEXATION, AND ARE NOW DOING IT TO OTHERS.
The Brunswick County GOP Unanimously passed the following resolution last night:  I strongly urge other county GOP Organizations to do the same


To: The Governor of North Carolina, The House of Representatives of North Carolina, The Senate of North Carolina, The Commissioners of the County of Brunswick, North Carolina and the various Boards and Councils of the Municipalities in the State of North Carolina.

A resolution condemning forced annexation
Whereas, Forced annexation refers to a process whereby municipalities may acquire unincorporated areas without the consent of residents and property owners in those areas.
And
Whereas, North Carolina is one of only four states that allows forced annexation of unincorporated property into a municipality.
And
Whereas, Property rights are the cornerstone and foundation of the American free society
And
Whereas, The Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution clearly states: “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”
And
Whereas, Our Declaration of Independence declares “…That to secure these rights Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
And
Whereas, The fate of those victims of forced annexation is decided by Boards, Councils, Chambers, and Officials for whom they cannot vote, and therefore do not represent those to be annexed and hence these government officials have no consent, and thereby no just powers.
Resolved by the Republican Party Executive Committee of the County of Brunswick in the sovereign state of North Carolina at the regular session assembled on the thirteenth day of August 2009
THAT, Forced Annexation of unincorporated properties by any Town, Village, or Municipality is an abrogation of the rights of citizens;
And be it Further Resolved that, Consent for annexation to said municipality lies solely with the property owners of the land to be annexed; This to be accomplished through vote or referendum solely of those being annexed.
And be it Further Resolved that, we, the Executive Committee of the Brunswick County North Carolina Republican Party, condemns forced annexation in the strongest terms, in any of its forms, and for any reason, and urges the North Carolina Assembly to pass, and the Governor to sign, legislation in accordance with the principles of this Resolution.
And be it Further Resolved that, we, the Executive Committee of the Brunswick County North Carolina Republican Party, demand that all forced annexations currently in progress be stopped and that any municipality considering such action cease and desist.
